The room had found its voice. Everyone gathered wasn't just curious — they were seeking practical solutions to real problems.

Charles didn't waste time with theory. He opened with a statement that shifted the entire conversation:
It's no longer a question of whether AI is going to be used in healthcare or when AI is being used in healthcare, it is being used in healthcare. It's not the future, it is now.
The message was clear — hospitals, clinics, and health systems aren't debating whether to adopt AI anymore. They're already using it.
Chales continued with a sobering reality:
About 80% of the systems out there, healthcare systems, don't have a formal AI governance in place.
This was the core of the webinar. Not whether AI exists in healthcare, but whether healthcare organizations have the governance to manage it responsibly.
Charles then explained the drivers behind AI adoption in healthcare:
There's not enough healthcare workers and administrative staff out there to do everything that needs to be done. You can use AI to improve, to optimize and improve the productivity of your existing staff.
The AI use cases he highlighted were compelling:
Clinical documentation - AI transcribing patient notes automatically
Revenue cycle automation - Processing claims and billing faster
Patient engagement - Scheduling appointments, answering common questions
Diagnostics - Assisting in image analysis and disease detection
But here's where Charles became notably serious:
"With innovation definitely comes the responsibility."
This wasn't a throwaway line. It was the thesis of everything that followed.

HIPAA was written in 1996… There is nothing in HIPAA about AI. They're doing some final rule updates. We're expecting another new final rule here maybe later this year, but the current rules don't say anything about AI.
The implication sank in. Healthcare organizations are implementing AI under a compliance framework that literally predates the internet as we know it.
Charles then clarified something critical:
AI is just another process. It still has to comply with all of the same rules as any other technical process under HIPAA.
But how do you comply with rules that don't specifically address what you're doing?

The danger wasn't from malicious actors trying to steal data. It was far more subtle.
In other words, healthcare organizations weren't losing patient data because someone hacked them. They were losing it because of how they designed their systems.
A nurse copying patient information into a ChatGPT prompt to get help with documentation. A clinic using an open-source AI model without checking data isolation. A vendor claiming HIPAA compliance without explaining how data actually stays protected.
These weren't attacks. They designed oversights that created exposure.

Use commercial AI models, but ensure your data runs in a private, encrypted tenant where only your organization has access.
6. Small organizations don't need complex policies — they need clear ones
Healthcare governance isn't about creating 200-page binders. It's about having a clear, documented policy about how AI is used in your organization.
7. Governance requires inventory and visibility
You can't protect what you don't know you're using. Organizations need an AI inventory — a documented list of all AI-enabled systems in their infrastructure.
8. Regulatory frameworks are evolving
HIPAA will likely be updated to explicitly address AI. Until then, organizations must apply existing HIPAA principles thoughtfully to new AI use cases.

Technically, restrict access to AI tools to only those who need them, and use tools that never expose full patient records (e.g., using only demographics without medical history).
9: What should we look for in a healthcare AI vendor?
A: Ask vendors about data isolation (do they provide a private tenant for your organization?), encryption (both in transit and at rest?), access controls (can you restrict who accesses the model?), and audit logs (can you see what data was used and when?). Get these commitments in writing in your contract.
